Alcohol permitted in Saudi Arabia after 73 years

Saudi Arabia, governed by Sharia law and completely closed to alcohol for decades, is preparing for a radical change in the tourism sector. The sale of alcohol will be permitted in the country under certain conditions, exclusively for tourism purposes.

WINE AND BEER PERMITTED ONLY IN LICENSED VENUES

Starting in 2026, alcohol consumption will be permitted in a controlled manner across 600 selected tourist zones in Saudi Arabia. This regulation will only cover licensed five-star hotels, resorts, and official representatives. The permitted alcoholic beverages will be limited to wine and beer.

The primary factor behind the government's decision is to increase tourism revenue and make the country a more attractive destination. However, another significant reason behind this move is that Saudi Arabia will host the 2030 World Cup and the 2034 FIFA World Cup.

RULE CHANGE DOES NOT COVER PUBLIC SPACES

The sale and consumption of alcohol will only be valid in designated areas. Possessing alcohol in open spaces, retail outlets, or residential areas will remain prohibited.

The wave of social change, which began with a swimsuit fashion show held at a tourist hotel last year, is now expanding with the alcohol regulation. It is reported that global hotel chains have begun discussions with Saudi authorities ahead of the new regulation.
