Alibaba's AI model surpasses DeepSeek
It has been reported that the Chinese technology company Alibaba's artificial intelligence model "Qwen3" has outperformed DeepSeek's R1 model in performance tests.
According to data from the independent LiveBench platform, which conducts performance tests for Large Language Models (LLM), the Qwen3 model family showed the best performance in tests conducted on open-source models.
Qwen3 outperformed DeepSeek's R1 model in coding, mathematics, and data analysis.
Alibaba launched the Qwen3 family, consisting of 8 advanced artificial intelligence models with parameters ranging from 600 million to 235 billion, in April.
Qwen3 had previously recorded performances that matched or exceeded those of the US-based artificial intelligence company OpenAI's o1 and the Chinese artificial intelligence company DeepSeek's R1 models in earlier tests.
THE AI SECTOR IS DEVELOPING RAPIDLY IN CHINA
The fact that two models emerging from China this year have achieved dominance among open-source models demonstrates the intense competition and rapid development in the country's artificial intelligence sector.
DeepSeek, supported by the High-Flyer Quant investment fund in China, launched its new open-source model R1, which it developed at a lower cost and using fewer chips compared to other artificial intelligence companies, on January 20.
The artificial intelligence model, which began to be used intensively worldwide in a short time, also surpassed the US-based ChatGPT in application stores, becoming the most downloaded artificial intelligence application.
The fact that DeepSeek's artificial intelligence model performed better with a much lower budget than its counterparts developed with large investments in the US caused a stir in the technology world and created selling pressure on technology stocks.
The success of the artificial intelligence model was compared to the Soviet Union's launch of the Sputnik satellite in 1957, which is seen as the development that started the space race between the US and the Soviet Union, and it was interpreted as a "Sputnik moment" that would ignite the race in the field of artificial intelligence in the competition between the US and China.
