Allegations of discrimination against healthcare workers migrating from Turkey to Germany: Diploma and residence permit crisis

It has been stated that Turkish nurses who migrated to Germany are experiencing difficulties because their diplomas are not recognized. It is alleged that nurses who graduated with a four-year university degree in Turkey are being employed as nursing assistants or caregivers in Germany.

In Turkey, becoming a nurse required graduating with a bachelor's degree from university departments of Nursing and Health Services. However, in Germany, this profession could generally be practiced with three years of vocational training.

THEIR STATUS WAS DOWNGRADED

It was explained that Turkish nurses are forced to work in low-status positions because their diplomas are not recognized despite the education they received. It was claimed that although healthcare workers can communicate better with immigrant patients thanks to their Turkish language skills, this advantage is being ignored.

According to a report by Ali Gülen from Sözcü newspaper, many Turkish nurses working in Germany are employed only as auxiliary staff because their diploma equivalence is not accepted. It was pointed out that this situation both lowers the salaries of Turkish workers and prevents them from fully attending to patients. It was also emphasized that healthcare workers who went to Germany to practice their professions are facing bureaucratic obstacles.

It was reported that the issue of diploma equivalence has become a major problem not only for nurses but also for doctors and other healthcare workers. It was stated that many Turkish doctors who settled in Germany cannot practice their profession because they cannot overcome the language barrier, and some have had to return to their home country. It was pointed out that official talks should be initiated between Turkey and Germany to resolve the problems experienced by Turkish nurses.
