Anti-corruption protests in Albania: Calls for resignation rise

Opposition parties in the Albanian capital, Tirana, organized demonstrations attended by thousands of people. Participants in the protests accused the government of corruption and theft, calling on Prime Minister Rama to resign.

Government opponents gathered in Albania. Thousands of people attended the demonstration organized by opposition parties, including the Democratic Party (DP), in the capital, Tirana. The demonstration, held at the call of DP leader Sali Berisha, saw protesters gather in front of the Prime Minister's Office on the Martyrs of the Nation Boulevard, stating that the protests would continue and that they would persist in criticizing the government's policies.

DP leader Sali Berisha claimed in his speech at the demonstration that Albania is in an emergency situation and that change will happen rapidly. Berisha stated that they would save Albanians from poverty and misery, that farmers would receive the subsidies they deserve, and that the order of theft and plunder would be replaced by a system where the interests of the citizens are at the center.

Opposition politician Ilir Meta, who was arrested on October 21 last year, stated in a voice message he sent that he is in prison unjustly and that the prosecutor's office remains silent in the face of Rama's actions. Criticizing the government, Meta called on the crowd for change.

During the demonstration, which lasted approximately 2 hours, 3 police officers were slightly injured by sound bombs thrown at the prime ministry building and were taken to the hospital.
