Anti-war Yabloko member Elena Perepelitsa detained in Moscow

Elena Perepelitsa, a member of the liberal Yabloko party known for its stance against the war in Ukraine, has been detained in Moscow. In a statement, the party indicated that 60-year-old Perepelitsa was detained on allegations of "making a donation to a banned organization."

The detention decision comes eight days after Yabloko Deputy Chairman Maksim Kruglov was sentenced to 7 years in prison on charges of "spreading false information" about the Russian army.

Known as one of the prominent liberal political movements in Russia following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Yabloko is not currently represented in the national parliament. The party holds a limited number of seats only in some regional parliaments.

Elections for the State Duma are expected to be held in Russia in September. While Yabloko is not expected to enter the Duma due to the tightly controlled political environment, the party's participation in the elections creates a limited space for anti-war views to be brought to the public agenda.

As the war in Ukraine enters its fifth year, the increasing impact of Ukraine's drone attacks within Russia on daily life is also leading the political atmosphere in the country to shift toward a harsher line.
