Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi sent a letter addressed to United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and UN Security Council President James Kariuki, requesting that the attacks by the US and Israel against Iran be addressed. In his letter, Araqchi stated that the US and Israel have carried out coordinated and large-scale armed attacks against Iran's national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and he strongly condemned these actions. He stated that the attacks on defense facilities and civilian areas in various Iranian cities constitute a clear violation of Article 2, Paragraph 4 of the UN Charter and amount to an armed attack against Iran.
"We are exercising our right to self-defense"
Araqchi stated that Iran is exercising its right to self-defense against these attacks in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter, emphasizing that the Iranian Armed Forces will use all necessary defense capabilities to counter the attacks and ensure deterrence. Araqchi stated that, in this context, bases, facilities, and assets belonging to Israel and the US located in the region are considered legitimate military targets, and that Iran will continue to exercise this right with determination until the attacks are completely and clearly ended.
Call to the UN and Security Council
Araqchi stated that the US and Israel are responsible for all consequences of these actions, including a potential escalation of tensions. Expressing that the armed attack against Iran could have serious consequences for regional and international peace and security, Araqchi noted that the UN, and especially the Security Council, must take urgent steps to maintain international peace and security.
Request for the text to be published as an official document
Calling on all UN member states that value the maintenance of international peace and security to clearly condemn these attacks and take urgent and joint steps against these actions, Araqchi stated that a copy of his letter was also sent to the foreign ministers of UN member states.
