Are talks between the TRNC and the Greek Cypriot administration restarting? How will the future of Cyprus be shaped?

Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Ersin Tatar announced that he has accepted the proposal from United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to meet with Greek Cypriot Administration (GCA) President Nikos Christodoulides at an informal dinner.

In a statement made at the Ercan Airport VIP Lounge, TRNC President Tatar expressed that a consultative meeting environment could be established to discuss how the future of Cyprus will be shaped, in a 4+1 format meeting to be held under UN supervision with the participation of Turkey, the TRNC, Greece, and the Greek Cypriot Administration (GCA).

'THE FEDERATION ISSUE IS A THING OF THE PAST'

Emphasizing that he has reiterated once again that the Turkish Cypriot side will not sit at the official negotiation table without the confirmation of its sovereign equality and equal international status, Tatar stated that they conveyed to UN Secretary-General Guterres that 'the book on federation has been closed, the issue of federation has been exhausted and will not be accepted, and that despite this, they will not cut off communication.'

Stating that they have conveyed the embargoes against the Turkish Cypriot community and the recent pressures from the Greek Cypriots to the UN, Tatar noted the following:

'I gave a positive response to UN Secretary-General Guterres' proposal to meet with the Greek Cypriot leader at an informal dinner. In other words, I said yes to the informal dinner proposal, which will not be in the context of Cyprus negotiations.'

Tatar said that within the scope of his contacts in New York, in addition to UN officials, he held productive meetings with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Minister of Foreign Affairs Hakan Fidan, Turkey's Permanent Representative to the UN Ahmet Yıldız, and Ambassador to Washington Sedat Önal, and that they also met with Turkish Cypriots living in the USA.
