CRI also described these countries' attitudes as 'hypocritical,' noting that they criticize other nations when they engage in similar practices.

The report states that governments in the 'global north' are increasingly using draconian measures while taking a stance against similar tactics in the 'global south.' It also emphasizes that these same governments frequently criticize regimes in developing countries for failing to respect the right to peaceful protest.

The report concludes that the repression in these countries—including long prison sentences, preventive detention, and harassment—constitutes a violation of governments' legal obligations to protect fundamental rights such as freedom of expression, assembly, and association.

Climate Rights International director Brad Adams said, 'Governments have a very strong and principled view on the right to peaceful protest in other countries, but when they don't like certain types of protests in their own countries, they pass laws and deploy police to stop them.'

Across Europe, the US, and the UK, authorities have responded to non-violent climate protests with mass arrests and new laws mandating long prison sentences. In some cases, participants in the actions have been labeled as hooligans, saboteurs, or eco-terrorists by politicians and the media.
