Attacker who shot National Guard members to be tried for first-degree murder
US District of Columbia Attorney Jeanine Pirro announced that the suspect will be tried for first-degree murder following the death of one of the two National Guard members targeted in an armed attack in the capital, Washington D.C., on November 26.
In a statement to the US-based Fox News channel, Pirro said that the suspect in the Washington D.C. attack, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, will be charged with first-degree murder due to the death of Sarah Beckstrom, one of the National Guard members he targeted in the attack.
US Attorney Pirro stated, "Of course, many more charges will follow, but we are upgrading the initial charge of assault to first-degree murder."
In a statement yesterday, Pirro identified the suspect as 29-year-old Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal and shared that the National Guard members who were shot were 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom and 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe.
US President Donald Trump announced yesterday on his US-based Truth Social account that the female soldier, Beckstrom, had lost her life and that the other wounded soldier, Wolfe, a sergeant in the US Air Force, was in critical condition.
