Attacks paralyze air traffic in Russia

The Russian Ministry of Transport announced that a total of 517 flights were canceled at airports in Moscow and St. Petersburg due to security measures following drone attacks carried out by Ukraine between July 19 and 22. As a result of these cancellations, approximately 75 thousand passengers were affected, and it was stated that more than 16 thousand tickets were refunded.

169 flights had to be diverted to airports in different cities for security reasons. The Ministry of Transport announced that the situation has been brought under control and that efforts are ongoing to address the grievances of the passengers.

Russian air defense systems managed to intercept the majority of the attacks. However, the alert level had to be raised in Moscow and other strategic regions. The periodic closure of critical airspace, particularly around Moscow, directly affected civil aviation.

Officials stated that the attacks did not directly target the airports, but that flights had to be canceled due to security risks. Russian authorities expressed that they are working on new measures to ensure the safety of civil air traffic.
