Australia: You cannot get a visa if you like tweets supporting Hamas

In Australia, where debates regarding the granting of visas to Palestinians fleeing Gaza, where Israeli attacks continue, are on the agenda, Mike Burgess, Director-General of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), made a statement on the matter. Burgess stated that support for Hamas could eliminate the possibility of coming to Australia.

Stating that even liking social media posts supporting the attack carried out by Hamas on October 7 could cause visa applications to be rejected, Burgess used the following expressions:

“If you support Palestine, that might not be a problem for entering Australia because that is not a problem in itself. But I have also said that if you have a violent extremist ideology or provide material or financial support to a terrorist organization, that will be a problem.

'YOU WILL NOT PASS THE SECURITY CLEARANCE'

If you think terrorism is not a problem, if you think the destruction of the state of Israel is not a problem, if you think Hamas and what they did on October 7 are good, you will not pass the security clearance. If you are tweeting that October 7 was acceptable, if you are retweeting or liking a tweet, that will be a problem."
