Azerbaijan's National Assembly holds its first session: Sahiba Gafarova re-elected as speaker

The National Assembly of Azerbaijan held its first session following the parliamentary elections held on September 1. During the meeting, attended by President Ilham Aliyev, Sahiba Gafarova was re-elected as the speaker of the National Assembly. Gafarova, who has previously held this position, is an academic specializing in literature.

Azerbaijan's National Assembly holds its first session: Sahiba Gafarova re-elected as speaker

The National Assembly of Azerbaijan held its first session following the parliamentary elections held on September 1, 2024. In addition to President Ilham Aliyev, government officials and members of parliament attended the session.

GAFAROVA'S ELECTION

During the session, Sahiba Gafarova, who was nominated again by the New Azerbaijan Party (YAP), was re-elected as the speaker of the National Assembly. Gafarova served in the National Assembly during the 4th, 5th, and 6th terms and served as speaker during the 6th term.

EDUCATION AND PUBLICATIONS

Before entering politics, Sahiba Gafarova worked as a lecturer and administrator at various universities. Gafarova, an expert in contemporary Russian and American literature, has authored more than 70 scientific works and textbooks.

ELECTION RESULTS

In the election held on September 1, Azerbaijanis chose from among 990 candidates for the 125-seat National Assembly. The New Azerbaijan Party, led by President Aliyev, won 68 seats, becoming the party with the most representatives in the assembly.

According to the election results, 44 independent candidates were also elected as members of parliament, while other parties won the following number of seats:

  • Civil Solidarity Party: 3 seats
  • Justice, Law, Democracy Party: 2 seats
  • Great Azerbaijan Party, Democratic Reforms Party, Great Order Party, Republican Alternative Party, Motherland Party, Azerbaijan National Independence Party, National Front Party, and Azerbaijan Democratic Enlightenment Party: 1 seat each

In the new term, the National Assembly, under Gafarova's leadership, is expected to make important decisions that will guide Azerbaijan's social, economic, and political development. Gafarova's academic background provides a significant advantage in bringing an intellectual perspective to parliamentary debates.
