Ballot boxes set on fire in the US
Hundreds of ballots were destroyed after ballot boxes were set on fire in the US states of Washington and Oregon.
Early voting is underway for the presidential election to be held in the US on November 5. In a statement released by the police, it was reported that hundreds of ballots were destroyed after incendiary devices were detonated in ballot boxes in the states of Washington and Oregon.
The statement noted that two ballot boxes were set on fire in Portland, Oregon, and one in Vancouver, Washington, on Monday. It was stated that the flames in the Portland box were quickly extinguished thanks to a fire suppression system inside the box and the intervention of a nearby security guard.
While it was stated that a "suspicious vehicle" was identified leaving the scene in Portland, it was noted that evidence obtained from the devices found in the boxes indicates that the fires are connected. It was reported that only 3 ballots were destroyed in the Portland incident, but hundreds of ballots were destroyed in a box in Vancouver.
Portland Assistant Police Chief Amanda McMillan said in a statement, "We don't know who is behind these acts. We know that these types of acts are targeted and intentional. We are concerned that this intentional act could affect the election process."
On the other hand, a similar incident occurred in Vancouver on October 8, but the ballots were not damaged.
