BBC broadcasts suspended after being accused of 'fake news'

In Niger, the broadcasts of the British public broadcaster BBC have been suspended on the grounds that it produced "fake news".

In a statement from the Nigerien Ministry of Communication, it was stated that the BBC, through its broadcasts, spread fake news aimed at "disturbing public peace and undermining the morale of the military".

The statement noted that for this reason, the BBC's broadcasts have been suspended for a period of 3 months.

The BBC has become the third organization to have its broadcasts suspended in Niger following the military coup in July 2023, after France 24 and RFI.

The BBC was airing its programs through local radio channels.
