Israel's far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has defended his practices regarding Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails. In a statement on his social media account, Ben-Gvir boasted about his policies that have worsened prison conditions.
Responding to a post by journalist Barak Ravid, which reported on allegations regarding conditions in Israeli prisons published in the Haaretz newspaper, Ben-Gvir stated, "I am proud that I have turned the prisons into a nightmare for terrorists."
Ben-Gvir stated that Palestinian prisoners are provided with only the minimum level of facilities, asserting that this approach is his own policy. The Israeli minister defended this line, which he implemented during his tenure as Minister of National Security.
The allegations reported by Haaretz claimed that Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails are facing hunger, violence, scabies, and harsh living conditions. The report stated that these conditions affect the daily lives of thousands of prisoners.
Ben-Gvir's statement has brought the debate regarding the treatment of Palestinian detainees and prisoners in Israel back to the agenda. The minister also expressed his desire to continue similar policies across a broader scope of authority should he become Minister of Defense in the future.
