'Big Mac' lovers beware! EU Court issues 'chicken' ruling

The General Court, which is part of the Court of Justice of the European Union, the EU's highest court based in Luxembourg, has reached a verdict in the case brought by the Ireland-based fast food restaurant chain Supermac's against McDonald's regarding the "Big Mac" trademark.

The court ruled that McDonald's has lost its trademark registration for Big Mac in the EU in the field of chicken products.

The decision stated that McDonald's had not used the product in question in the EU continuously for five years.

McDonald's had registered the Big Mac in 1996 to cover both meat and chicken products.

Supermac had initiated legal proceedings in 2017 to cancel McDonald's use of the Big Mac name for its chicken products.
