Bill 'condemning' Biden administration passes House: Democrats also provided support

U.S. President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and several government officials have been condemned by a bill approved in the House of Representatives for their decision to carry out a 'chaotic and deadly withdrawal from Afghanistan.'

According to reports in the U.S. press, Republican Michael McCaul, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, introduced the resolution to the House, which condemns President Biden, Harris, and 13 current and former senior administration officials for the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.

In his statement, McCaul said, 'Three years ago, the world witnessed one of the most devastating political disasters in American history. The Biden-Harris administration withdrew all U.S. forces from Afghanistan without any plan, without care, and without remorse. As a result, 13 U.S. service members and more than 170 Afghan civilians were killed, and 45 U.S. service members and countless others were wounded.'

The resolution was passed with 219 votes in favor and 194 against. 10 Democratic members also voted in favor of the bill.

In the resolution, Biden, Harris, and other officials in the administration were condemned for 'decision-making and implementation failures throughout the withdrawal process from Afghanistan' and were also held responsible for the deaths of 13 U.S. service members who were killed by a suicide bomber at the airport in Kabul during the final days of the withdrawal.

Although the resolution carries no legal weight, it is noted that it provides a political advantage to Republicans ahead of the upcoming presidential election.

The fact that 10 Democratic members supported the resolution at a time when elections are approaching is considered a significant development for the Republicans.

Following the vote, Republican House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman McCaul wrote on X: '10 Democrats joined me in condemning the Biden-Harris administration officials who played a key role in the deadly Afghanistan withdrawal. I am pleased that these colleagues put politics aside to do the right thing, which is to vote to provide accountability to the American people.'

'CHEAP ELECTION STUNTS'

Democrats, on the other hand, reacted to this development by describing it as cheap election games.

Democratic Representative Jamie Raskin, who opposed the bill, said after the vote, 'After the impeachment inquiry became a laughingstock, they are now doing everything they can to attack the president or the vice president. The country sees this as cheap election-year stunts and games.'

Those condemned include National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin, as well as several current and former press secretaries from the White House, the State Department, and the Pentagon.

On August 26, 2021, a suicide bombing was carried out at one of the gates of the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, where U.S. troops were heavily concentrated. Dozens of Afghans and 13 U.S. soldiers were killed in the attack.

WHAT HAPPENED DURING THE U.S. WITHDRAWAL FROM AFGHANISTAN?

The U.S., which invaded Afghanistan in 2001 on the grounds that the Taliban administration was harboring Osama Bin Laden, the leader of the terrorist organization Al-Qaeda responsible for the September 11 attacks, left Afghanistan after withdrawing its last soldier on August 31, 2021.

Discussions regarding the withdrawal, which ended in chaos, pointed to the lack of coordination and lack of preparation by U.S. institutions.

The U.S. military conducted an airstrike on a vehicle on August 29, 2021, claiming it would carry out an attack on the aforementioned airport. The U.S. military and administration claimed they were targeting an ISIS vehicle preparing for an attack and that the secondary explosions in the vehicle were caused by explosives inside.

A very short time later, it was revealed that the intelligence was completely wrong and that 10 civilians, including 7 children, were killed in the attack.

Thus, America's longest war ended with a disastrous withdrawal.
