Bill demanding Macron's impeachment to be discussed in French National Assembly

The Bureau of the National Assembly in France has evaluated a bill submitted by the opposition aimed at initiating impeachment proceedings against Macron. In the vote held at the National Assembly Bureau, where the left holds a majority, the bill was accepted for review by the assembly's Law Committee with 12 "yes" votes against 10 "no" votes.

If the bill receives a green light from this committee, it will be discussed in the National Assembly General Assembly. If the proposal receives the approval of two-thirds of the deputies, it will be forwarded to the Senate. If two-thirds of the senators also accept the bill for Macron's impeachment, a final vote involving both chambers of Parliament will need to be held.

If two-thirds of the members of Parliament vote in favor of the proposal in the final vote, the bill for Macron's impeachment will be considered accepted.

The Socialist Party (PS) had announced that they would vote against the impeachment of Emmanuel Macron if the bill were to be discussed in the National Assembly General Assembly.

PROBABILITY OF REMOVAL FROM OFFICE SEEN AS 'LOW'

Since the far-left La France Insoumise (LFI) party, which submitted the proposal, does not hold a majority in the assembly on its own, the completion of the procedure for Macron's removal from office is seen as a low probability.

On the other hand, it is considered difficult for the bill to pass in the Senate, where the center-right The Republicans (LR) party holds the majority.

WHAT HAPPENED?

In the general elections held in France on June 30 and July 7, the leftist New Popular Front (NFP) won the most seats, but no party or alliance reached the absolute majority of 289 deputies. Emmanuel Macron refused to appoint the joint candidate of the leftist alliance that won the elections and appointed center-right Michel Barnier as prime minister on September 5.

While the new legislative year in France is expected to begin on October 1, Barnier is expected to form the new government this week.

The opposition far-left party LFI had announced that they would submit a motion of no confidence against the government on October 1. LFI supported a petition campaign demanding the impeachment of French President Macron and submitted a bill containing this demand to the Assembly on August 31.
