Boat sinks off the coast of Yemen: At least 49 migrants dead, 140 missing

The United Nations International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced that at least 49 migrants lost their lives in a boat accident that occurred off the coast of the Shabwah Governorate in southeastern Yemen on June 10.

IOM spokesperson Mohammedali Abunajela issued a written statement regarding the boat accident off the coast of Yemen.

Abunajela stated, "At least 49 irregular migrants died and 140 people are missing after a boat capsized off the coast of Yemen. Among those who lost their lives in this horrific tragedy are 31 women and 6 children."

Stating that this tragedy highlights the importance of acting together to find urgent solutions to migration issues and to ensure the safety of irregular migrants on migration routes, Abunajela expressed his condolences for those who lost their lives.

Abunajela noted that they are committed to improving search and rescue operations in the region by providing support to the survivors.

Hadi Harma, the District Governor of Radum in Shabwah Governorate, reported in a statement yesterday that many people fell into the sea as a boat carrying approximately 250 irregular migrants from Ethiopia was approaching the coast of Radum.

Stating that the irregular migrants fell from the boat while it was about one nautical mile off the coast of Radum, Harma had reported that 38 irregular migrants, 26 women and 12 men, had lost their lives.
