As Israel's attacks on the Gaza Strip continue, many countries around the world are seeking new ways to deliver humanitarian aid to the region.
Following the announcement by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen today that a maritime humanitarian aid corridor to Gaza would be opened via Cyprus, British Foreign Secretary David Cameron made a statement.
Cameron said that it would take months for the planned maritime corridor to deliver aid to the Gaza Strip via the Greek Cypriot Administration to become fully operational.
"WE CAN ALSO PLAY A ROLE IN THE DELIVERY OF AID"
Stating that they welcome the US-led plan, Cameron called for immediate permission for aid to enter the Israeli port of Ashdod in the north of the Gaza Strip, saying, "Ships could take aid from Cyprus to Ashdod today." Noting that the UK would play a role in the preliminary screening of aid to be taken to Cyprus, Cameron added, "We can also play a role in the provision and delivery of aid if necessary."
