Bulgaria and Romania become full members of Schengen

Bulgaria and Romania have become full members of the European Union's (EU) visa-free travel zone, Schengen. At a meeting of EU interior ministers in Brussels, it was decided to include Bulgaria and Romania in the Schengen area by land as well.

The two countries had been included in the EU's free travel zone for sea and air travel on March 31. With the latest meeting, it was announced that Bulgaria and Romania are now full members of Schengen. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen made the announcement on social media by sharing the countries' flags. Von der Leyen added the note 'Fully in Schengen. Where you belong' to her post.
