Bulgarian Prime Minister Denkov resigns

In his statement, Denkov described his resignation as an “invitation to negotiate” to his coalition partner, the Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party, stating, “My resignation is not a political game, but the result of a promise made earlier.”

Stating that his government will continue its duties until the next government is formed, Denkov noted that he expects to serve as deputy prime minister in the government where Mariya Gabriel will become prime minister.

WHAT HAD HAPPENED?

According to the agreement reached between the GERB party and the We Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria (PP-DB) alliance, Denkov's 9-month term expires on March 6.

Denkov, who became prime minister representing the PP-DB alliance, will hand over his post to Foreign Minister Mariya Gabriel, who represents the GERB party.

Denkov became prime minister after receiving a vote of confidence from parliament on June 6, 2023.

Denkov's resignation must be approved by parliament.
