Nikita Zhuravel, 20, who burned a Quran in front of a mosque in the city of Volgograd, Russia, last year, has been sentenced to 3.5 years in prison by the court.
The 13 imams who filed a criminal complaint against Zhuravel and attended the hearing requested that he be sentenced to prison, arguing that he had caused "deep harm to spiritual values." Nikita Zhuravel was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison at the hearing held at the Grozny Visaitovsky District Court.
HE HAD APOLOGIZED DURING HIS INTERROGATION
Nikita Zhuravel had expressed his regret and apologized multiple times during all his interrogations and while in prison. In his first interrogation, Zhuravel had claimed that Ukrainian intelligence had offered him money and that he had carried out the act for that reason.
KADYROV'S SON HAD ATTACKED HIM
Footage of Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov's son beating Zhuravel had been released, and Ramzan Kadyrov stated that he was proud of his son, saying: ''He beat him and did the right thing. Furthermore, I believe that anyone who violates any holy scripture, including those who blatantly burn it, should be severely punished.''
