Call for Biden to withdraw from the race

The New York Times (NYT) Editorial Board published an article titled "To Serve His Country, President Biden Should Leave the Race."

The article noted that Biden failed to convince the American public during the debate that he is capable of meeting the demanding requirements of the office he seeks to hold for another term, stating, "Voters cannot be expected to ignore what is plain to see: Mr. Biden is not the man he was four years ago."

The article described Biden as appearing like a "shadow" of himself during the debate, struggling to explain what he would do if re-elected and failing to respond to the provocations and lies of his Republican rival Donald Trump, pointing out that the president is currently taking a reckless gamble.

The article emphasized, without naming specific individuals, that there are more capable Democratic leaders who could offer more convincing and energetic alternatives against Trump, stating, "The greatest public service Mr. Biden can do now is to announce that he will not continue to run for re-election."

The article also noted that Trump proved during the debate that he poses a significant danger to democracy and is a figure who does not deserve the public's trust, adding that he promised to be a president who would not be constrained by the checks and balances of the American political system if re-elected.

Furthermore, while reiterating that the U.S. needs to field a stronger candidate against the current Republican nominee, the editorial board stated that if the election race in November remains between Trump and Biden, they would still support the incumbent president.

FIRST LIVE DEBATE SPARKS CRITICISM

In the U.S., Democratic President Biden and his Republican rival Trump, who are competing in the presidential election to be held on November 5, faced off in their first live televised debate on CNN on the night of June 27.

Although Trump did not achieve a clear advantage over his opponent throughout the program, Biden failed to deliver a performance that would alleviate concerns about his age for a second term and was subjected to intense criticism following the program.

As discussions flared over whether Biden should withdraw from his candidacy, Republican Representative Chip Roy announced that he is preparing a resolution calling on Vice President Kamala Harris to invoke the "25th Amendment to the Constitution" to remove President Biden from office.
