Call for emergency evacuation plan: Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza can no longer function

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated in a post on the X social media platform that the WHO led a United Nations (UN) assessment team on a high-risk mission to Al-Shifa Hospital.

"The team observed that the hospital is no longer able to function. There is no water, food, or fuel, and medical supplies have been exhausted," Ghebreyesus said, noting that given this dire situation and the condition of the patients, including infants, health workers have requested support for the evacuation of patients who can no longer receive life-saving care there.

Ghebreyesus stated, "We are working with our partners to develop an urgent evacuation plan and we request that this plan be fully facilitated. We reiterate our call for the protection of health and civilians. The current situation is unbearable and unjustifiable. Ceasefire now."

FORCIBLY EVICTED FROM THE HOSPITAL

Health sources in Gaza had stated that the Israeli army demanded the evacuation of Al-Shifa Hospital, where patients, the wounded, displaced persons, and medical staff were located.

The Israeli army had forcibly evicted all displaced Palestinians and most of the patients from Al-Shifa Hospital in the Gaza Strip, which it has kept under attack and blockade.

In a statement, the director of Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza, Muhammad Abu Silmiya, stated that the evacuation process began after the one-hour deadline given by the Israeli army for patients, the wounded, displaced persons, and medical staff to leave the hospital.

Abu Silmiya had stated that they were in contact with UN officials regarding the patients and 30 premature babies remaining in the hospital, which the Israeli army had emptied.
