Cameron takes a hard line against Putin at the UN Security Council

A session was held at the UNSC to mark the second anniversary of Russia's attacks on Ukraine.

French Foreign Minister Stephane Sejourne stated that the war in Ukraine is solely desired by Russia and that Russia bears the responsibility, saying, "Russia could end the war right now if it wanted to, but it chooses not to by failing to withdraw its troops from Ukraine."

Noting that the war started by Russia has affected a large number of people, Sejourne expressed that the food and energy crises, in particular, are impacting the most vulnerable countries.

Sejourne emphasized, "This war is illegal and violates the UN Charter."

Stating that he condemns the killing of civilians, rape, and torture cases in the strongest possible terms, Sejourne said, "These crimes must not go unpunished."

"WE MUST ENSURE PUTIN FAILS"

UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron targeted Russian President Vladimir Putin, accusing him of invading a sovereign UN member state.

Arguing that Putin did this without any legitimate justification or threat from Ukraine, Cameron said, "Putin once said this was a war between brothers. What kind of absurd logic is this that has resulted in so many lives lost? Is Russia fulfilling its responsibilities as a permanent member of the UN Security Council in the name of international peace and security?

How many more absurd justifications will they offer to legitimize the invasion? You say Ukraine is an existential threat, then you claim Ukraine doesn't actually exist; are you fighting NATO or Nazis? Only the Putin regime acts like Nazis." he said.

Stating that all UN members are exposed to the effects of the war in Ukraine, Cameron assessed, "If we allow the belief that a country can invade another without consequence, then a terrifying situation arises where every country could face this."

Underlining that the borders of UN member states cannot be violated, Cameron said, "That is why we must ensure Putin fails. We must not give up and we must stand strong."

"PUTIN IS TRYING TO REWRITE HISTORY WITH LIES"

US Permanent Representative to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield also stated that despite all of Russia's efforts, its "lies" are being seen, saying, "Putin is trying to rewrite history with lies. In doing so, he wants to break the resilience of the Ukrainian people and the international community."

Underlining that this should not be allowed to happen, Greenfield expressed that Ukraine is both trying to prevent Putin's invasion and continuing to strive to feed the world.

Greenfield stated that the international community must support Ukraine, assessing, "If Russia lays down its weapons today, the war in Ukraine ends. There is only one aggressor in this war and only one side can end the war."

"EU HAS BECOME A SATELLITE OF THE US"

Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN Vassily Nebenzia stated that today's meeting was organized by Western states and carries the same purpose as last year's meeting.

Stating that foreign ministers were "dragged" to New York last year as well and made identical statements, Nebenzia argued that Ukraine has failed completely.

Nebenzia claimed that the West continues to "pump weapons into Ukraine" and alleged that the Ukrainian government lacks independence and is corrupt.

Noting that the European Union has become a "satellite" of the US, Nebenzia recorded that the Union is paying a very heavy financial price and continues its anti-Russian propaganda.

"RUSSIA'S NAME IS ASSOCIATED WITH WAR CRIMES AND BARBARISM"

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said, "Russia's name is now associated with aggression, war crimes, and barbarism."

Kuleba noted that only by acting together can the "aggressor" be stopped and international peace and security be rebuilt.

Reminding that he issued a warning just before Russia's "invasion" of Ukraine, Kuleba said, "Those who did not listen to me that day, please listen today. Either we stop Russia in Ukraine today, or we will witness a fire that will claim millions of lives elsewhere in the world."
