Canada prepares for migrant influx following US elections: Legault calls for swift action
Quebec Premier François Legault has warned that Donald Trump's victory in the US elections could lead to a major influx of migrants into Canada. While Legault emphasized that the federal government must act quickly to ensure border security, Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland made statements aimed at easing these concerns.
Holding a press conference after Trump declared his election victory, Legault drew attention to the potential for illegal migrant activity in the region.
Warning that his country must act quickly to secure its borders against a "major influx of migrants" due to Trump's victory in the US elections, Legault stated, "We will call on the federal government to fulfill its responsibility to protect our borders."

Emphasizing that the number of migrants who could come to his country would be very high, Legault pointed out that Quebec shares a border with four US states.
Following Legault's remarks, Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland sought to ease concerns that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government would be unable to control the borders, stating, "I want to reassure Canadians that we absolutely understand the importance of border security and of controlling our own border, of knowing who is coming into Canada and who is not."

Canada's national police force announced that contingency plans are in place, including increased border surveillance in the event of a migrant influx.
While there are approximately 11 million illegal immigrants in the US, Trump had promised during his election campaign that all illegal immigrants would be deported.
