Canada's response to US tariffs: It will harm families
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that they will respond to the 25 percent automobile tariffs to be applied to Canada as part of the tariff increases announced by US President Donald Trump.
Carney spoke at a press conference in Ottawa regarding the new customs duties that Trump announced for all trading partners as part of "reciprocal tariffs."
Stating that they will respond to the 25 percent automobile tariffs to be applied to Canada as part of the tariff increases announced by Trump, Carney said, "We are taking these measures reluctantly."
Carney stated that the measures in question would be designed to "have a maximum impact in the US and a minimum impact in Canada."
Unlike Trump, Carney announced that Canada would not impose tariffs on automobile parts imported from the US, and emphasized that the US administration would "ultimately change course" due to the potential harm it would cause its own citizens because of the tariffs.
Mark Carney also said, "Their own policies will harm American families. This situation will challenge Canada as much as it will challenge other US partners."
TARIFF PLAN
President Trump had announced that the US would impose reciprocal tariffs on other countries and that the base tariff rate would be 10 percent.
Under the decree signed by Trump yesterday, it is envisioned that tariffs will be imposed on many of the US's trading partners.
Among these, it is planned to apply reciprocal tariffs of 34 percent to China, 20 percent to the European Union, 46 percent to Vietnam, 32 percent to Taiwan, 24 percent to Japan, 26 percent to India, and 10 percent to Turkey.
