Canada's new leader Mark Carney challenges Trump: 'Until they show us respect...'

Justin Trudeau has resigned from the prime ministry he held for 9 years. At the convention organized by the Liberal Party, Mark Carney took the leadership seat by receiving 86 percent of the votes. It was reported that Carney will begin his duties as Prime Minister of Canada shortly.

Although he has not held public office before, Carney served as the governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England. The 59-year-old Canadian politician also worked as a special advisor to Trudeau.

In his first speech, Carney criticized the US administration, stating the following:

''The Canadian government has rightly retaliated. We are implementing tax policies that create maximum impact in the US and minimum impact in Canada. We will continue this practice until the Americans show us respect.''

Following the 'trade war' Trump launched against Canada and Mexico, both countries retaliated against the US. Suggesting that Canada would suffer if it 'resisted,' Trump emphasized that Canada should join the US.

Emphasizing that Canada will not become a part of the US, Carney said, ''Canada will never become a part of America.''

US President Donald Trump described Canada as the '51st state' after taking office. Following this statement, trade tensions arose between the two countries. Trump announced that he would impose additional customs duties on Canada and Mexico. However, Trump later stated that he had postponed the tax increase until April.
