Canadian Foreign Minister Anand sets condition for regime change in Iran

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, who is in Munich to attend the Munich Security Conference, made statements to the press regarding the severed political relations between Canada and Iran. Emphasizing that her country supports regime change in Iran, Anand said, "We will absolutely not re-establish diplomatic relations with Iran without regime change." The Canadian minister also announced that 7 more individuals have been added to the sanctions list under the "Special Economic Measures" imposed by her country on Iran.

A written statement released on the Canadian government's website stated, "The individuals sanctioned today are linked to Iranian state organs responsible for intimidation, violence, and international repression targeting Iranian dissidents and human rights defenders. Iran's use of proxy agents and criminal networks to silence critics, including harassment, surveillance, and planned acts of violence in Europe and North America, has caused serious concern among Canada and like-minded partners. These actions threaten the sovereignty of other states and undermine the principles of international law, global peace, and security."

The statement noted that with these latest measures, the number of Iranian individuals sanctioned by Canada has risen to 222. It was also stated that 256 Iranian entities are included on the sanctions list.

Canada completely severed ties with the Tehran administration, with which it has had tense diplomatic relations, in 2012.
