Canadian Prime Minister: We plan to recognize Palestine

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada will recognize the State of Palestine at the 80th session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly to be held in September.

As reactions to Israel's massacres in Gaza and the humanitarian crisis it has caused continue, Canada has added its voice of support for Palestine. In a written statement, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney noted that his country has long maintained its commitment to the idea of a two-state solution, saying: "The growing suffering of civilians leaves no room for delay in the coordinated international action needed to support peace, security, and the dignity of human life." Carney, who stated that "Preserving the two-state solution means standing with all those who choose peace over violence or terrorism, and honouring the natural desire of both Israeli and Palestinian states to coexist peacefully as the only roadmap to a safe and prosperous future," added: "For these reasons, Canada intends to recognize the State of Palestine at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025."

"THE PATH TO PEACE ALSO REQUIRES A PALESTINIAN STATE"

Reminding that Canada supports both a strong and democratic Palestinian government and the existence of Israel, Carney stated: "Canada will always resolutely support the existence of Israel as an independent state living in peace and security in the Middle East. The path to lasting peace for Israel also requires a viable and stable Palestinian State that recognizes Israel's indispensable rights to security and peace."

"CANADA WILL BE A CONSTRUCTIVE PARTNER"

Emphasizing that they will work alongside international partners toward a peace plan that defines governance and security arrangements for Palestine and ensures the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza at the necessary scale, Carney said: "Canada will be a constructive partner in building a just, meaningful, and lasting peace in the region and a future that respects the dignity, security, and aspirations of all Palestinians and Israelis."
