Cargo ship hits mine in the Black Sea

Ukraine's southern military command announced that a Panama-flagged bulk carrier heading to a port on the Danube River to load grain hit a mine placed by Russia in the Black Sea.

The statement indicated that the ship lost control after hitting the mine and a fire broke out on the upper deck.

The Odesa Regional Prosecutor's Office, which announced that the captain and an Egyptian sailor were injured in the incident that occurred yesterday, stated that the sailor was taken to a hospital in the city of Izmail.

Russia had increased its attacks on the area around the Danube River and Ukrainian ports in the western Black Sea after withdrawing in July from the Grain Corridor Agreement, which allowed for the export of Ukrainian grain via the Black Sea.
