'Catalan' protest in Spain

In Spain, reactions continue against the amnesty bill for Catalan separatists submitted by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's party, the Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE).

FAR-RIGHT GROUPS JOINED THE PROTEST

Protests continuing across Spain continued today as approximately 170 thousand anti-amnesty Spaniards gathered in the capital, Madrid. In the largest anti-amnesty demonstration held in Spain to date, protesters waved Spanish flags and expressed their reaction to Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez with banners reading "Sanchez the traitor" and "Do not sell out Spain." The demonstration in the capital was also attended by the leader of the opposition People's Party (PP), Alberto Nunez Feijoo, and the leader of the far-right Vox Party, Santiago Abascal.

'CATALAN' AMNESTY BILL

The "amnesty bill for Catalan separatists" submitted by the PSOE in the Spanish capital of Madrid will cover about 400 separatist Catalan politicians and NGO representatives who were convicted or are still facing legal proceedings following the illegal public vote held on November 9, 2014, and the referendum processes on October 1, 2017, within the scope of pro-independence initiatives in Catalonia.

According to the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), this amnesty will be the largest in Spain since the general amnesty introduced in 1977 for crimes committed during the Francisco Franco dictatorship, and the first amnesty bill approved in the European Union (EU) since 1991.
