CENTCOM announces: US launches new strikes on Iranian Revolutionary Guard targets
CENTCOM announced that IRGC targets were struck in response to attempted attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and US troops in the region.
The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has announced the launch of new strikes against elements of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in Iran. The statement indicated that the operations were conducted following attempted attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and US troops stationed in the region.
According to the statement from CENTCOM, US forces operating in the Middle East launched strikes against IRGC targets in Iran at 12:00 PM Eastern Time, which corresponds to approximately 7:00 PM Turkish time. The command stated the reason for the strikes as "the Revolutionary Guard Corps' attempted attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and US troops stationed in the region."
Reports in the Iranian press stated that sounds of explosions were heard in some regions in the south of the country. It was alleged that explosions occurred in Konarak in Sistan and Baluchestan province, and around Bandar Abbas and Qeshm Island in Hormozgan province.
No official statement has been made yet regarding potential damage, loss of life, or injuries in the region.
Tensions between the US and Iran had risen again in recent days due to military activity around the Strait of Hormuz. The US had previously reported that it targeted two launch ramps in Iran's Larak Island that were allegedly being prepared to fire missiles carrying naval mines. It was reported that the Iranian military responded by conducting an air strike on US troops stationed in Jordan.
