Charlie Kirk tension in the European Parliament

Right-wing members of the European Parliament reacted to the blocking of the requested moment of silence for Kirk by banging on their desks.

In the European Parliament, a request for a one-minute moment of silence for right-wing activist Charlie Kirk, a well-known supporter of US President Donald Trump who died yesterday following an assassination attempt in the US, caused tension.

The EP spokesperson stated that moments of silence are announced by the president at the opening of the plenary session, saying, "If there is a request for a one-minute moment of silence, this request must come from a political group and must be made at the opening of the session. If there is a request, it can of course be held in October."

The spokesperson stated that Charlie Weimers, a member of the European Parliament from the right-wing European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group, was allowed to make a statement regarding the shooting of Kirk before the voting session, but that he wanted to dedicate the remaining time of his speech to a moment of silence, which was blocked by the EP Vice President Katarina Barley, who was presiding over the session.

The spokesperson explained that after the moment of silence was blocked, right-wing groups in the parliament protested the situation by banging on their desks and shouting.
