China is building the world's largest nuclear fusion facility: Will they use it for military purposes?

Published satellite imagery shows that China is constructing a massive nuclear fusion laser facility in the city of Mianyang in the southwest of the country. It was stated that the facility is 50 percent larger than a similar facility in the U.S.  

Planet Labs, which analyzed the satellite images, reports that the facility consists of four outer arms and a central experimental chamber. The central chamber also contains a target room where hydrogen isotopes will fuse to generate energy. Experts stated that this facility could be used for both clean energy production and nuclear weapons research.

Laser fusion aims to generate energy by heating and compressing hydrogen isotopes with high-powered lasers. This technology mimics the Sun's energy production process. China had previously taken a significant step in the field of fusion with the EAST project, known as the 'artificial sun'.

The U.S. was also conducting similar studies at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.  

No official statement has been made regarding the exact purpose for which the facility will be used. However, experts note that fusion research could also contribute to nuclear weapons development processes. It was noted that this move by China could accelerate the global fusion race.  

China's new facility was being evaluated as a significant development in the field of clean energy production and nuclear technology. However, it has not yet been clarified whether the facility will be used for military purposes.
