China steps up for WHO after US withdraws support: 'We will work to strengthen it'
China has announced that it will support the World Health Organization (WHO), from which the US has announced its withdrawal. No information was provided regarding the scope of this 'support'.
After President Donald Trump signed a decree canceling all of the US's agreements with the WHO, China stated that it would 'work to strengthen' the organization.
According to an AFP report, China pledged its support to the WHO on Tuesday, following the signing of the decree by Trump, who had criticized the organization for its 'failure in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic' and announced the US withdrawal.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated the following regarding the decision:
'The role of the WHO should be strengthened, not weakened. China will, as always, support the WHO in fulfilling its responsibilities... and will work to build a common health community for humanity.'
