Chinese professor disappears after returning to his country: Similar cases have occurred

A Chinese professor working in Japan, Fan Yuntao, disappeared after returning to his country.

According to a report by the official Kyodo news agency, Chinese professor Fan, a lecturer at "Asia University," went missing after traveling to the Shanghai region of his home country, China, in February of last year.

Fan had told his family living in Tokyo that he would be going to his country temporarily and would return to Japan by April 2023.

It was reported that there has been no word from Fan despite a year having passed.

Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi stated that the situation is "related to the human rights of a professor who has been teaching at a Japanese university for years," and noted that they are closely monitoring the situation regarding the Chinese professor's disappearance.

Fan is known at the university as an expert in international law and politics.

ESPIONAGE INVESTIGATION

Chinese professor Zhu Jianrong from Toyo Gakuen University in Tokyo also disappeared after traveling to his hometown of Shanghai in 2013.

It is stated that the espionage investigation opened against Zhu, who was able to reunite with his family in Japan about six months later, is still ongoing.

Chinese professor Yuan Keqin from Hokkaido University of Education in northern Japan was detained in China in 2019 on espionage charges, and an indictment was prepared against him by the prosecutor's office.
