The US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has taken an extraordinary step. The CIA has launched a Chinese-language social media campaign calling on government officials in China to defect and leak state secrets to the US.
The 2 videos released by the intelligence agency yesterday featured fictionalized scenes of Chinese officials who were disillusioned with the ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and subsequently made contact with the CIA.
The videos, published on social media platforms such as Facebook, Telegram, Instagram, and X, include instructions on how to contact the CIA in a "safe" and "secure" manner.
"TO TAKE CONTROL OF MY FUTURE"
In one of the CIA videos, an actor portraying a high-ranking CCP member describes the fear he feels for his family. The Chinese-language description of the video states, "This man, who reached the top through perseverance throughout his life, now deeply realizes that no matter how high his status is, it is not enough to protect his family in these turbulent and restless times. He wants to take control of his own future and find a way to protect the successes he built with years of hard work and his family. Realizing that everything he possesses could disappear in an instant, this man makes the difficult but vital decision to contact the CIA securely."
Another video was shared with the words, "It has become an open secret that our leader has repeatedly failed to deliver on promises of prosperity. It is time to start working for my own dreams."
The videos were shared under the titles, "Why I contacted the CIA: To take control of my future" and "Why I contacted the CIA: For a better life."
"ONE OF ITS CORE MISSIONS IS TO GATHER INTELLIGENCE"
Regarding the social media campaign, CIA Director John Ratcliffe stated, "One of the CIA's core missions is to gather intelligence for the president and policymakers. One of the ways we do this is by recruiting sources who can help us steal secrets."
