Clerics in Iran call for 're-evaluation' of nuclear fatwa
A group of clerics in Iran has sent a letter to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei calling for a 're-evaluation' of the fatwa declaring nuclear weapons haram, arguing that it should be reconsidered in light of changing circumstances.
A group of clerics from Qom, Mashhad, Isfahan, and other religious education centers in Iran have requested a review of the fatwa regarding the "production and use of nuclear weapons" in a letter addressed to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The letter states that the current fatwa was issued within the context of past conditions, noting, "This fatwa has been a testament to Islam's commitment to peace, justice, and the prohibition of weapons of mass destruction."
However, it adds, "Today, rapid changes are occurring in social, political, and security conditions at both regional and global levels; threats are increasing, and this situation makes the protection of Iran necessary."
Emphasis on deterrence and security
The letter emphasizes that rulings can be re-evaluated as time and circumstances change, that the prevention and removal of harm and the protection of the Islamic order are among the fundamental principles, and that legitimate defense is necessary in the face of vital threats. In this context, it is stated that reviewing certain fatwas is not only possible but in some cases necessary and even mandatory, noting that this would increase Iran's deterrence and security against threats.
Decision left to Khamenei
The letter further emphasizes that the clerics are not preemptively making any decisions, stating that the issue is being raised within a framework of scholarship and responsibility, and expressing their hope that Supreme Leader Khamenei will evaluate the matter and announce his opinion if he deems it appropriate.
