CNN: Trump administration considers using MOAB bomb against Iran

It has been alleged that the administration of US President Donald Trump is evaluating the option of using the GBU-43/B MOAB bomb in the event that military operations against Iran resume. According to a report by CNN citing officials familiar with the matter, Washington is working on potential attack scenarios targeting Iran's nuclear facilities and energy infrastructure.

The report highlights that the MOAB, known as the "Mother of All Bombs," is one of the largest non-nuclear American bombs, while noting that there are questions within the administration regarding the extent to which the weapon would be effective against deep underground targets.

DEBATE OVER EFFECTIVENESS AND CIVILIAN CASUALTIES

A source familiar with the plans said that while the MOAB can create a massive destructive effect over large areas, it was not designed to destroy deep underground facilities. The source described the bomb as a "massive psychological warfare weapon" that is "very effective for clearing large areas" but has limited utility beyond that.

The MOAB is known as one of the US military's largest conventional bombs.

CNN's report also included concerns regarding civilian casualties in the event of its potential use. The bomb's ability to create a high-blast effect over a wide area is fueling debate, particularly regarding targets near residential areas.

It was reported that the US and Israel defended attacks on Iran in February on the grounds of preventing Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons, and that no progress has been made in diplomatic initiatives conducted since the summer months. It was noted that in recent weeks, Washington has focused more on economic pressure than direct military options.

The US military first used the GBU-43/B MOAB bomb in 2017 against ISIS targets in Nangarhar province, Afghanistan. The bomb, which weighs approximately 9.8 tons, made headlines at the time for an attack targeting the organization's network of tunnels and bunkers.

The US Department of Defense has not yet made an official statement regarding the allegations. The report stated that the upcoming Congressional midterm elections and rising fuel prices are also increasing political pressure on the Trump administration.
