In India's capital, New Delhi, thousands of people were detained during a protest organized by the youth-led Cockroach People's Party (CJP) movement regarding the election system.
Barricades were set up in the city center before the demonstration, and tens of thousands of security personnel were deployed. It was reported that CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, as well as numerous opposition politicians, were among those detained.
The CJP had planned to gather today at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to demand the resignation of India's Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and call for electoral reforms.
VOTER LIST DEBATE
The movement and opposition parties argue that millions of voters were removed from the rolls during the voter list update process and that the practice was carried out in favor of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The Election Commission of India and the BJP deny the allegations. Officials state that those removed from the lists were deceased, had duplicate registrations, or were ineligible to vote. However, many protesters claim their names were deleted from the voter rolls.
The CJP emerged on social media in May as a joke in response to a comparison made by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, who referred to unemployed youth as "cockroaches." The movement later transformed into a protest group that brings together the demands of young people on issues such as unemployment, the leaking of exam questions, and government accountability.
The protests organized by the CJP during the summer lasted for five weeks, and following these actions, the then-Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan resigned. This time, the movement has brought its objections regarding the election system and voter lists to the agenda.
