Colombian President Petro narrowly escapes death! Assassination plot thwarted at the last minute

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has announced that he escaped an alleged assassination attempt planned against him thanks to a change in his route. Speaking at a cabinet meeting, Petro stated that while traveling by helicopter on Monday, they received intelligence regarding a potential attack before approaching the landing point on the Caribbean coast.

Explaining that the flight plan was changed urgently as a result, Petro said, "We traveled toward the open sea for 4 hours and arrived at a place we were not supposed to go. That is how I was saved from being killed." Emphasizing that the decision was made very quickly, Petro described the process by saying, "I don't remember why we did it, but we did." Petro did not provide details regarding the individuals or groups alleged to have targeted the helicopter.

HAD PREVIOUSLY STATED HE WAS A TARGET

Petro, who took office in August 2022 as Colombia's first leftist president, had previously made statements claiming that criminal organizations were targeting him. Arguing that he is under threat from drug cartels and armed groups, Petro had claimed that intelligence units had prevented potential attack attempts against his aircraft.

However, opposition circles remain cautious about these claims, citing limited concrete public evidence, and question the accuracy of the statements.
