According to a report in the Swedish press, the formation of new sinkholes in the Konya Plain could accelerate as temperatures in the region rise due to the climate crisis. The report, which points out that more than 2,600 sinkholes have already formed in the region, warns that residential areas could be under threat.
Sweden's official news agency, SVT, covered the sinkholes forming in the Konya Plain. Highlighting the formation of sinkholes, the report stated, 'Sinkholes have existed for hundreds of years in Konya, which has dry and calcareous soil. However, this number has recently been increasing at an alarming rate, and many experts warn that rising climatic temperatures could further increase the number of sinkholes.'
In the SVT report, Valentin Troll, a professor of petrology at Uppsala University, warned that increased drought could trigger the formation of new sinkholes.
The report states that densely populated areas are particularly under threat.
The report used the phrase, 'Sinkholes are getting closer and closer to industrial and residential areas. A serious fear of accidents is growing among the public.'
Furthermore, SVT included a statement from Konya farmer Yiğit Aksel, who said, 'Whenever someone goes out to work in the fields, they take someone with them for fear that something might happen.'
