Common alphabet project for Turkic states accepted in Baku

The Organization of Turkic States (OTS) has reached the final stage in its efforts for a common alphabet. The work carried out by the Turkic World Common Alphabet Commission was accepted at its 3rd meeting, held in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, between September 9-11.

At the meeting, where our country was represented by the Turkish Language Association, the Latin-based Common Turkic Alphabet project, originally proposed by scientists in 1991, was examined in detail.

As a result of the work conducted, a new alphabet consisting of 34 letters was accepted. A decision was also made that each letter in the alphabet should represent the different phonemes found in Turkic languages.
