Consecutive terror attacks in Thailand: 5 dead, 13 injured

In the attack on the Sungai Kolok district office in Narathiwat province at 19:00 local time, it was noted that masked and armed individuals arrived at the scene in two vehicles and opened fire on the building and people in the vicinity. Authorities announced that a security guard at the district office lost his life at the scene during the attack. It was stated that another security guard could not be saved despite being taken to the hospital for treatment.

The Thai government announced that a total of 10 people, 3 of whom were civilians, were injured in the attack. It was stated that the injured were transferred to nearby health centers and taken under treatment. Preliminary investigations determined that the attackers had placed 100 kilograms of explosives in the district office and detonated this device during the attack.

Local media reported that an explosion also occurred in Pattani province at the same time as the attack in Narathiwat. It was alleged that 3 security guards lost their lives and 1 person was injured as a result of the detonation of a bomb device placed on the side of the road.

CONDEMNATION FROM THE PRIME MINISTER

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra conveyed her condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in a statement made following the attacks. Shinawatra emphasized that not only military security but also the psychological security of the people must be ensured in the region. The Prime Minister stressed that she strongly condemns the groups that carried out the attack.

It was announced that the neighboring country of Malaysia has taken precautions due to the increasing violence in southern Thailand. Malaysian Police Chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat announced that border security controls will be tightened. Mamat stated that the security situation in the region will be closely monitored.
