Constitutional amendment in Hungary: Ban on LGBT events and restrictions on dual citizenship introduced

The proposal, submitted to parliament at the request of Prime Minister Viktor Orban, was passed with 140 votes in favor against 21 “no” votes. The approved amendment includes a ban on marches and events organized by LGBT individuals and mandates that gender definition be based solely on biological grounds.

In a post on X (Twitter), Orban stated: "The constitutional amendment in Hungary has become law. We are protecting the development of children. We maintain that individuals are born as either male or female. Common sense is important in Hungary.”

RESTRICTIONS ON DUAL CITIZENS

As a result of these changes, the path has been cleared for the temporary suspension of citizenship for individuals who hold Hungarian citizenship but are also citizens of another country, if they are alleged to pose a 'threat to national security.'

In a statement made in March, Viktor Orban had announced the beginning of a process he described as 'Easter cleaning.'

Government Spokesperson Zoltan Kovacs emphasized on his social media account that the changes are a 'constitutional safeguard against ideological influences that threaten the well-being of children.'
