Contaminated cantaloupe kills 8, leaves hundreds hospitalized

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that 230 people across 38 states have been affected by a salmonella outbreak since mid-November.

The statement noted that 96 of the patients were hospitalized and 3 individuals have lost their lives.

Canadian health authorities also announced that 129 cases have been identified in the country, with 8 of the 44 hospitalized patients having passed away.

The CDC pointed to pre-cut cantaloupes sold in grocery stores as the source of the illness, urging the public not to purchase or consume cantaloupes of unknown origin.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also announced that brands linked to the outbreak are recalling their products.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF SALMONELLA?

Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and fever.

While symptoms disappear within a few days in most cases, hospitalization may be required, particularly for young children and those with weakened immune systems.
