Court blocks Trump's decision to halt foreign aid

Washington District Court Judge Amir Ali has temporarily blocked Trump's decision to halt all foreign aid funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Accepting the lawsuit filed regarding the cutting of USAID funds, Ali ruled for the temporary resumption of the funding.

U.S. President Donald Trump had ordered the funds to be cut, claiming they led to 'corruption.' The AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition and the Global Health Council took Trump's decision to court.

Ruling for a temporary stay on the decision to halt all foreign aid funded by USAID, Ali stated in his decision that 'government officials have not provided a logical explanation for the suspension of foreign aid allocated by Congress.' The decision cited the 'widespread harm' caused by the funding cuts to non-governmental organizations and other entities that carry out U.S. aid programs abroad.

The federal judge ordered the temporary resumption of funding for all foreign aid programs financed by USAID. Until the court issues a second ruling, all foreign aid that the U.S. provided before Trump took office will resume.

USAID DEBATES IN THE U.S.

Trump signed an executive order regarding foreign aid immediately after taking office on January 20. The order noted that all ministries and agencies responsible for foreign development aid programs would cut foreign aid.

A statement from the White House noted that a 90-day review period had been initiated to evaluate the alignment of USAID-funded programs with U.S. foreign policy. The U.S. Department of State also announced on January 27 that all foreign aid funded by the Department and USAID had been halted.

Elon Musk, head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), announced that employees had been placed on administrative leave due to issues he experienced with USAID administrators. The agency's social media accounts were also shut down. The Washington D.C. District Court in the U.S. stated that the execution of the decision regarding placing USAID employees on administrative leave had been temporarily stayed.

Protesters who gathered in Washington opposed Trump's decisions regarding USAID. In the protests, which were also supported by Democrats, reactions were directed at the Trump administration and U.S. billionaire Elon Musk.
