Court blocks Trump's 'National Guard' move

U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut has temporarily blocked the Trump administration from deploying National Guard units from Oregon, Texas, and California to the city of Portland to quell protests.

While the Trump administration argued that the protests in Portland were "violent" and necessitated the deployment of National Guard troops to the city, Judge Immergut stated that the Trump administration's claims regarding a dangerous situation in Portland were not supported by facts and that the deployment was unconstitutional and unlawful. Judge Immergut, who was appointed by Trump, stated in her ruling that the use of the military to suppress protests without the consent of the state of Oregon jeopardized the sovereignty of that state and others, and escalated tensions in the city of Portland.

Judge Immergut's temporary restraining order will remain in effect until October 19, unless extended. The Trump administration is expected to appeal the decision quickly. This case highlights a serious constitutional conflict between federal authority and state sovereignty, raising significant questions about the appropriateness of military intervention against protests. This situation, which has been sharply criticized by state officials, has increased concerns about the replacement of police intervention with military force.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration has approved the deployment of National Guard troops from other states to the city of Chicago in the state of Illinois.
